Google and Apple have created in-car systems that enable people to manage their content while keeping their focus on the road. There are two brand new systems on the market today, first to come to market is Apple’s CarPlay, and more recently, Google has released Android Auto, which has yet to receive a release date. Both systems develop better integration between the vehicle and the driver, and the interfaces from the mobile platforms carryover into the vehicle to give the driver a streamlined and user-friendly experience.
Apple CarPlay
Apple's CarPlay is becoming widely available on many new 2014 models and onward, the list so far includes Honda, Hyundai, Volvo, and Ferrari, and many more auto manufacturers are to follow suit. CarPlay allows the driver to access Phone, Maps, Messages, and Music through Siri integration or in-car controls. When using Maps, the CarPlay system can predict where you most likely will go using addresses from your email, messages, contacts, and calendars. Using Siri, the driver can listen to and compose new text and email messages. Most importantly, drivers will be able to access their music using iTunes Radio, and a variety of third party applications such as Spotify, iHeart Radio, and Stitcher.
Android Auto
Android Auto is not much different from Apple’s CarPlay system, other than the fact it is Android based. It has easy in-car integration and allows the driver to access Google Maps, text messages, contact info, music, and has the ability to work with several other third-party apps all using the sound of your voice. When using Google Maps, Android Auto will give the driver suggestions about their destination. For instance, if the driver is going to the beach, Android Auto would suggest to the driver to purchase sunscreen. Driver’s will have multiple music content options including Google Play, Music, and even Pandora Radio.
